Quick explanation in README/documentation?

I know it's probably a case of "if you don't know what it is, you don't need it", but I ran across this in the new webpack docs and have no idea what it does or how I could use it. Maybe a one or two sentence summary in the readme could clear that up. Something to do with the now deprecated component.js project?
