2.5.3, Label in name: Text abbreviations in interface elements

The revision of the 2.5.3 Understanding text (thanks @mbgower ) has specified that symbolic text characters (as in editing toolbars) are not considered text that needs to be part of the accessible name. An edge case still exists where abbreviated text is used in icon-like interfaces or menus. Two examples:

1. Language choice: icons with EN, DE, ES etc.
2. Icons for captions audio description, or sign language: on German sites, you frequently find icons with "UT", "AD" or "DGS" for these options.

It is unclear whether here, the abbreviated text would need to be part of the accessible name, so that in the first case, the accName would be "English, EN", certainly satisfying 2.5.3 but probably leading to a more confusing screen reader output. In the second case, this suggests accNames like "Untertitel, UT", also more confusing. It is also not clear whether speech input users would actually say "click ut" or "click you-tee" and whether the latter would do anything useful (I guess not).

Any thoughts on this? Should we extend the already quite complex Understanding text for 2.5.3?
