Creates and passes through an option to turbopack to invalidate the cache. The dev overlay can then (not implemented) call this endpoint.

Invalidation is performed by writing a marker file to disk, and then actually deleting the cache upon the next startup because:

  • Getting the database to drop all file handles is tricky.
  • You can't delete open files on Windows.
  • Writing an invalidation file is atomic, recursively deleting a directory is not.

Testing

Set up a small app with a large dependency (three.js). Ran the build, restarted the dev server, saw that the cached run was fast.

Ran

And saw that the server restarted and the next page load was slow.

Remaining Work (will come in subsequent PRs)

In rough order of priority:

  • A separate endpoint to poll to see when the server is back up.
  • A webpack+rspack implementation. It looks like I can do a hack to forcibly change the webpack cache version, which should trigger similar behavior upon the next restart.
  • Passing a boolean to the dev overlay telling it if persistent caching is enabled or not.
  • The devtools UI implementation.
  • Telemetry.
  • A CLI subcommand that leverages this, so that you can do it from the terminal.

should this be part of handle_db_versioning? seems somewhat related (we could think of this as some kind of 'versioning poison pill'? that might make it a bit harder to forget if a new backingstorage is added

Yeah I also think this shouldn't be here. The invalidation logic is part of KeyValueDatabaseBackingStorage, and so should be the cleanup logic.
It's too easy to forget calling check_db_invalidation_and_cleanup before KeyValueDatabaseBackingStorage::new.

Maybe change the api of KeyValueDatabaseBackingStorage::new to include the cleanup (and take a impl FnOnce() -> T for the database)?

Okay, but I'm going to change the name of the new method to something like initialize in that case. I don't like constructors that do I/O, as it's often assumed that constructors are cheap.

Oh, I see why I originally did this: The database clearing must happen before LMDB's fresh DB check and startup cache steps. It's also more ideal, but not strictly necessary for it to happen before the versioning check (because we invalidate all versions).

I've split the constructor for KeyValueDatabaseBackingStorage into two: one for versioned on-disk databases and one for in-memory databases (which don't need cache clearing).

This means that I also moved the versioning logic into the KeyValueDatabaseBackingStorage constructor, as it seems like we always want that for on-disk databases.

Sounds good. I think it'd rather put the context inside of cleanup_db though, instead of leaving it up to the caller.

We'll have an extra caller of this whenever I add the CLI subcommand for clearing the DB.

Whoops, this was left over from when I was applying the codepath in invalidate_db, because failing to delete something there wouldn't be a problem.

nit: prevent writes first? i find myself wondering if invalidate_db might partially fail. e.g. create the file but fail to write the payload.

Discussed IRL: I'm just going to make sure that invalidate_db is atomic and keep this ordering as-is.

If it successfully creates the file but fails to write the contents (that should never realistically happen), we can just swallow that error or log it directly to stderr, but not return the error.

In the reverse case, there's some possibility that some future implementation of prevent_writes could stop an in-progress file write, and that could lead to an inconsistently written database.
