Bug description

Signal Desktop hangs and crashes, uses large amounts of memory which continue to rise.

Steps to reproduce

-Close out of Chrome in windows task manager.
-Open Signal, try to send one message.
-Signal hangs, upon checking Chrome task manager Signal begins to use more and more memory.

Actual result: Signal hangs, upon checking Chrome task manager Signal begins to use more and more memory.

Expected result: Should be normal.

I can bring the debug log up, but I cannot submit because it crashes. I have unchecked all disappearing messages from both chrome and and my android.

Was Signal-Desktop offline for a long time?
Does this happen if you don't "try to send one message"?
Do you have conversations with a lot of longer-term disappearing messages?

No I was using Signal on my desktop all the time, and I use it exclusively on my android.

If I start fresh and open Signal without sending a message it doesn't take up CPU but sits at 237MB. As soon as I click a contact the CPU jumps to 13% and the memory rises and continues to rise.

I did try using disappearing messages and didn't seem to have a problem until recently. I removed disappearing messages and I still have the same problem. I have also remiaged my computer to a known working state, but I did update my video card drivers.

Are you saying you deleted your message history on Signal Desktop and still have this problem?

Yes, I have deleted all messages on Signal Desktop. I have also deleted them on my android, and had the other contact delete messages on their side as well.

Well, I'm stumped. We might get some clues by capturing a javascript profile using chrome dev tools on the background page:

1. Open chrome://extensions in a new tab
2. Check 'Developer mode`, top right.
3. Click 'background.html' under Signal
4. Click 'Profiles' in the top bar
5. Click Start, wait a minute, click Stop
6. Click Save

Post resulting file here for analysis.

Also at this point, since your messages are already deleted, you have nothing to lose by reinstalling (a solution I propose only with great self loathing 😞).

I have already reimaged my computer in an attempt to figure this out :(.

I just reinstalled Signal Desktop and it seems to be working! I don't see memory spikes and its not crashing.

I believe I still had disappearing messages enabled even after I reinstalled my OS. I removed disappearing messages after I read about it on here a few hours ago.

Don't hate :) you're helping me out still. I love what you all are doing here, and I appreciate it. I did save the javascript profile twice before I attempted to reinstall Signal. Would you still like them? If so, how should I upload them. Copy paste? It doesn't like the file type when I drag and drop.
