make distcheck fails with missing conf.py

I tried to build the 1.0.1 release, but make distcheck fails stating that conf.py is missing.

I checked EXTRA_DIST and the file is present there. A "make dist" also leads to a tarball with ./doc/conf.py. So I assume it is "just" a problem with the directory names autotools generate during "make distcheck". As such, it's mainly a nit, but if we could resolve it, that would be best. Unfortunately, I don't know where the problem exactly is. I'll hold release for a day or two and if we don't come up with a solution, I'll do a release anyway.
