The specific use case I would like to be able to support:

Monitoring chlorophyll levels in a lake.

(1) Calculate NDVI over some water body using Landsat
(2) Do it over a time series dataset
(3) calculate zonal summaries (mean, median) over water body using either a raster or polygon as zone definition.
