Version number pattern

Thank you for making releases regularly.

The latest release was 1.7.1, but the previous release was 1.7.
I am wondering if there is any possibility of unifying the release numbers in the future to something like three numbers (X.Y.Z, i.e. 1.7.0 instead of 1.7).

Could you explain the benefit? Although I feel the same way, but we want to be clear.

When comparing version numbers, it is easier to make comparisons if the number of parameters is constant.
For example:

• It is sometimes difficult to tell whether the version before 1.7.1 is 1.7 or 1.7.0.
• New version: jqlang.jq version 1.7.1 microsoft/winget-pkgs#130678 (comment)

Some software like Pandoc¹ has been versioning for years with a variable number of parameters (e.g. 3.2 -> 3.2.1 -> 3.3), but since 1.7.1 is the first jq version to have a third parameter, it would be worth writing up the versioning rules so that downstream software can correctly validate the jq version now.
