Usage of padding needs trimmed down (Accessability & Usability) #29652

Your use case

I've mulled over creating an issue over this for a while, however the new member list design is such an extremely clear example of the problem that it's just not ignorable at this point.

Element's UI is way to big. It is nearly unusable without zooming out. The UI team seems to love adding exessive padding where it is not needed and isn't customisable by the user. For users who use vertical monitors, Element is now nearly unusable without hiding the member list, which is not the case with Discord.

The minimum sizes for both the new room header bar and member list are less than the static sizes of their equivilants in Discord. Even with the viewport scaled down to 80% at 1080p. For the header bar, this is both the fault of padding and the absolutely massive room avatar.

I have previously used userstyles to reduce Element's padding to a more comterable and usable amount but as the member list redesign is a virtualist, CSS can't change the spacing.

I won't comment on the room list redesign lab however it shares these exact same problems and more.

The Element team desperately needs to put more thought into how the UI scales for lower resolutions and how padding should be used to reduce visual clutter. Putting padding everywhere does not help readability and usablity, it makes it worse!

The uage of padding as a whole should either be reduced so more of Element's UI can be used for actually displaying messages, or added as optional and as part of accessability options.

Have you considered any alternatives?
