Evidence
Like BW.1, it appears that this lineage originated in Mexico. It is just now starting to spread internationally, with two sequences uploaded from Austria and one from Denmark yesterday, all three with collection dates of November 7. It has also been detected in England. Sequences from Mexico tend to have much longer delays than elsewhere, so I expect more sequences of this lineage to be uploaded before long from Mexico. Austria and Denmark are the quickest at sequencing, so it is likely present in other European countries as well.
One sequence from Mexico also has S:F157L.
According to the Bloom Lab RBD Heat Map tool, A486 has a slight advantage over F486 in terms of ACE2 affinity and a moderate advantage in terms of RBD expression.
