Disable dropdown window

With add-on active in the side bar (ctrl+B), typing in "Search Bookmarks" produces a drop down list that I'm assuming is a history of past search entries. This is annoying. The resulting drop down is difficult to make go away without intervention of the mouse or hitting Enter key. Drop down covers first (and maybe only) entry in results.

Again, this functionality is annoying as hell. Feature request is to make this go away or otherwise have a setting to disable any kind of search history caching.

Hello @scottfurry , this is a function as requested by users, available since 2.0.102 in February, cf. #217

The behavior of the drop down is controlled by FF .. however there is a very simple way to remove it = simply click in the search box .. and it vanishes ..

Now if you really think this feature is not useful, then I can look at adding an option to disable typing history, default history enabled. However, are you really sure it is not useful, in spite of its little inconvenient ?

@aaFn - I read through the user request from #217. I can appreciate their usage case.
However, for me it's more of an annoyance than utility. Sure, click in the search box but again that's mouse interaction. And as soon as you type another letter the search history pops up again.

Personally, I would prefer to disable that functionality. From a preferences and other users perspective the search history could be default ON. The drop down box just gets in my way being a keyboard/shortcuts type user. Don't make me reach for the mouse if I don't have to. My $0.02, preference.

Would be happy if it could be removed or at least configurable.

Hello gents, after playing a bit with the HTML function, it seems I found a way to make the search list disappear after a delay, when it is not explicitely asked for by double clicking on the box.

So I am proposing that instead as a solution to the annoyance =

• Implement a delay of 3 seconds, after which the searchlist disappears by itself.
• This delay is only active when the searchlist is automatically shown. It is not active when the user explicitely requests the search list to appear.

3 seconds is quick enough to not become really annoying, and is long enough for somebody to pick a choice (and if they miss it, they can click again on the search box to get it again).

I appreciate the effort. However, three seconds is still intrusive. I also believe that this may alter the purpose of the drop down in the first place (show search history). I'm partial to disabling the drop down box outright, if possible. Search history drop down can be left enabled by default so long as it can be disable in the pluggin preferences.

Understood, and I agree this is some annoyance, especially when there are very few results.
However, we already have a lot of options in the add-on, so I am trying to avoid adding more and more ..

So can we say that we try like that for 2.0.110:

• disappear after 3 seconds (user can always recall it by clicking inside the search box),
• not appear when results are displayed and there are 3 or less of them (because anyway a search history term is always equal or more specific, and so will have fewer results .. so search history is really useful when there are many results)

and then you come back to me if this is still not manageable, after using BSP2 for a while ?

I have seen add-ons with a laundry list of options. The number available, IMHO, should not be an inhibiting consideration. Add more as necessary.

I'm disappointed that the "3 second" proposal is to be the solution. That was not the intent of the issue report. The drop down history is a PITA to me. Making it present for three seconds will tick someone else off - too long or too short. This will lead to a feature request for adjustable time - speaking of not wanting to add options...

If disabling the drop down list is not possible for logical or pragmatic reasons then okay - let's close this issue.

I don't currently have a strong opinion on this specific functionality, but want to throw in a couple thoughts for consideration and to hopefully be helpful:

Would having another keyboard key that would result in the same outcome be helpful to you? Just wondering... no pressure to answer yes or no! :)

I agree with this line of thought for tools such as BSP2. As long as each option is named well, perhaps with a little popup or descriptive sentence to explain its functionality, I almost always prefer more choices and customization options. 👍🏾

I cannot enter Japanese words using IME in the search box. Version 2.0.109 works fine. I would like an option to turn off this change.
