to distinguish valid characters from EOF

Before:

$ printf "a\xffb" | ./tail | xxd
00000000: 61                                       a

After:

$ printf "a\xffb" | ./tail | xxd
00000000: 61ff 62                                  a.b

I introduced this bug in #16

to distinguish valid characters from EOF

Before:

```
$ printf "a\xffb" | ./tail | xxd
00000000: 61                                       a
```

After:

```
$ printf "a\xffb" | ./tail | xxd
00000000: 61ff 62                                  a.b
```
