Storybook 9 Release Plan

Hello Storybook Community,

Storybook 9 is underway! This release brings significant improvements and consolidations to the Storybook package ecosystem, with a focus on making addon development simpler and more maintainable. We are currently working on a migration guide. In the meantime, please refer to our Migration.md.

We will be tracking work items in the burndown board. Below is the timeline we are working towards. We will update this if anything were to change. In the meantime, you can try out the latest Storybook 9 prerelease:

✅ Alpha

This will be the initial preview of Storybook 9. During this phase, expect frequent prereleases with new features and breaking changes. The main focus will be on:

• Package consolidation into the main storybook package
• Improved addon development experience
• TypeScript and dependency updates

✅ Beta

Expected: End of April 2025

Once we are feature complete, Storybook 9 Beta will be released. This release will incorporate all breaking changes and new features in 9.0; the documentation and migration guide will also be complete by then. The focus during the beta phase will be on:

• Refinements and bug fixes
• Community feedback integration
• Migration testing with popular addons

We encourage addon authors to start migrating their addons during this phase; your feedback and bug reports will be invaluable!

✅ Release Candidate

Expected: Beginning of May 2025

At the Release Candidate (RC) stage, Storybook 9 should be stable enough for addon authors to release updated versions of their addons. We will coordinate a round of public QA with the Storybook community, focusing on:

• Addon compatibility testing
• Migration path validation
• Final bug fixes and refinements

✅ Stable

Expected: Beginning of June 2025

Finally, we will be ready to ship Storybook 9 stable release! This release will feature:

• A fully consolidated package structure
• Improved addon development experience
• Complete migration documentation
• Stable APIs for addon authors
