New Version Available idea

I was thinking of a notifications system to alert space nerds there is a newer version.

Maybe a text file on git with current version number that would be compiled into snis and show on main screen in corner.
Then a second git text that would have the most current version number in it, It would also have a list of new features or fixes. The client could show this list in a text box if there was a newer version.

It could be used for other things also like, "See what's coming", etc...

I don't really want to phone home apart from the assets updating thing.
