Open objects in a panel, rather than modal.

Is it possible (or on the roadmap) to open objects from an Array in a panel, rather than a modal? For example, if my array contains a reference to another document, it will open up a panel to the right of the current one with that document, however if the array contains an object, it instead opens as a modal over the content. I'd like to be able to open these objects in a panel.
