PEP-751, a standardized lockfile format for Python, is accepted.

This may (mostly be) as simple as just waiting for pip to implement this and then just delegating the work there but certainly there will need to be changes on the pex side to support this as well.

Yeah that's exactly what I want to use it for. At the moment, no tool consumes it, but I wanted to get ahead on the ticket creation because I'm currently fighting managed services that want a requirements.txt rather than a Pex lockfile, which we use via Pants, and I'm looking at pylock.toml as the long-term solution to this problem.

So, pex3 lock export has existed since day 1 of Pex supporting lock files at all several years ago. Are you using that and having trouble? The new lock format will be ~0 improvement over the current pex3 lock export support.

@ndellosa95 I am interested to know if pex3 lock export already satisfies your needs or not. I'm eager to fix any deficiencies, since its reason for existence is ~exactly the sort of case you describe.

Yes it does. I was vaguely aware of pex3 lock export but I hadn't used it before, so thanks for the walkthrough.

Great, thanks for confirming @ndellosa95 . I'll mark this as a feature request then since it's no more than a future nice to have with no actual functional benefit currently.

OK, I have this all working minus some features that don't make a lot of sense with Pex (extras and dependency-groups). Those can be added as follow-ups if / when somebody yells with a real use case.

The 1st cut won't have interoperability testing, just some hand-crafted ITs. I wanted to use uv for the interop test pre #2756, but it chokes on Pex pylock.toml files for now as noted here: astral-sh/uv#13383
