While the stable version of cpanm does not yet support static install, the stable version of Menlo::CLI::Compat does, and is used by Carton. So it will static install any dist that opts in, and because PERL_CPANM_OPT is localized it cannot be disabled with PERL_CPANM_OPT=--no-static-install. Please add an option to carton install and carton update to disable this behavior.
