Production version of code search broken for many repos

This has been opened as a 'question' (#44388), and 'answered' with a workaround, I just wanted to open this item as a 'Bug' to make sure it was tracked as an actual issue affecting production version of search.

Problem: Code search is broken for many repos. According to the question linked above, it may be possible to work around it by joining the search beta, but that would still mean the production version is broken for many repos.

Example search: https://github.com/videolan/vlc/search?q=move

It returns zero code results, but there are hundreds of uses of the word 'move' in code and text files in that repo. Several other examples are given in #44388.
