ChromeOS Flex Penguin VS Code cannot sign in to Github to use Copilot

I've started VS Code and installed the GitHub extension and the Copilot extension.
I click the accounts button and select: Sign in with GitHub to use Github Copilot
A new tab opens in Chrome asking me to Select user to authorize Visual Studio Code, and displaying an option to select my currently signed in user.
I click continue
The screen now says: You are being redirected to the authorized application.

Nothing else happens
If I click the link it takes me to a blank screen where nothing else happens.
I've actually started paying a subscription fee to use Copilot with Github so being unable to sign in is a problem.
The same problem existed before I started the subscription.

Eventually VS Code tells me that it failed to sign in to GitHub. I try again with no success.
