"Source Error" with HLS playback

Steps to reproduce

1. Enable HLS playback
2. Attempt to play back any video

Expected behavior

It should play.

I'd have also least expected a meaningful error message.

Other details

Together with #7364 that occurs without HLS playback, this means you're completely unable to play any video in LibreTube; effectively breaking the app.

Playback in the piped web front-end works without issue.

I've just run a quick test and it seems like the NewPipeExtractor (used by Piped and LibreTube) doesn't actually return any hlsUrl in its response. If you're selfhosting Piped, could you please check if the field exists in the JSON response of the /streams/{videoId} endpoint?

Effectively the app is unusable for me as well because of this.
I checked the response from /streams/{videoId} and there is no hlsUrl field in it. There are hls, dash and lbryId fields but they are all null.

YouTube doesn't generate HLS manifests anymore, except for iOS/Mac. I think we can either enable the iOS client at the cost of additional API calls (+ we can't generate poTokens for it, so it'll likely get blocked) or drop the preference as it likely won't work in the future again with the migration to SABR. I would be in favor of the latter, possible using iOS HLS as a last resort internal fallback.

I'm not really familiar with the current situation of HLS at YouTube, but from following your explanations I'm of the same opinion.

You're much more familiar with the codebase than I am, any idea on how to best do this? I was thinking about just checking if there are any video streams, but that doesn't work, since there can be valid, but non-usable streams.

Hmm, the only other idea would be to listen for player errors, but that isn't going to help realiably either because we can't really tell whether the sources are generally broken or if it's just some issue with the format the player will automatically recover from and use a new format.
