Summary
If a document is externally edited there is currently no way to upload the new version. This request would allow to upload a new version from the API/UI.
More info on use case
I have an ebook reader where I annotate papers as I read them. I would like to upload the edited PDF after reading it.
I understand that editing PDFs internally in Paperless would add complexity and there are just too many tools for doing so (manual annotations, filling formulars, etc) so my proposal is to only support external tools to integrate with Paperless.
External tools would work with the latest archived version (not the original) and, when changes are done, upload the new version that replaces the archived version (so it is not needed to keep multiple versions). Alliteratively the upload document might create a cloned document with the same tags and pointing to the same original version.
NOTE: my wife and I are developers so we could contribute a PR when time allows if this feature is ok for the maintainers. We already use Paperless (an extra instance) for all our home static documents and therefore looking forward to use for our work.
