Triage on existing issues

Hi,
As a potential contributor, my first stop, of course, is the issues list. My immediate concern is that the list does not appear vetted or in any way prioritized. It makes it quite difficult for someone like me to focus efforts on high value resolutions.

How does somebody choose such an issue on which to begin?
