It does not seem to be because it does not work for my phone. (I enabled that setting)
Is it just disabled on f-droid for the moment?

Thankfully, I still have some of the original apps before they were bought out by the newer company. I don't have all of them, but if you want the ones I have, you can download the zip file that has the following apps:

Simple Gallery
Simple Dialer
Simple File Manager
Simple SMS Messenger
Simple Notes, and
Simple Voice Recorder

They still work with the latest version of Android. They are currently being stored on Yandex Disk Cloud Storage. If you wish to remain anonymous, I encourage you to utilize a VPN before downloading.

I have not tampered with the apps in any way and are still in their original condition by the original developer before he, well, you know.
