The geometry-de package used to be an independent package, but has become part of the main geometry package.

However, sourcing the geometry-package for example via "\usepackage[margin=2cm]{geometry}", I receive an error:
"Unfortunately, the package geometry-de could not be installed."

Sorry that error is not from the geometry package (or even from tex)

It is presumably an error from whatever package manager you are using (Miktex perhaps?) in which case it would need to raised as an issue there. I don't have miktex available so I can't suggest whether you can force the installation. (I'm guessing this is a miktex issue as I don't think texlive would give that message.)

Probably your miktex package database is outdated. Update it in the miktex console, menu tasks. Do it in user and admin mode.

I do not get this error using Miktex 2.9.7300 64-bit. I agree that this is most likely not a geometry related issue.
