Title

Quick Stories

Elevator Pitch

Write up a few extra "shell stories" (with their respective issues) to not lose sight of this project, for which my enthusiasm might wane over the holiday period (I really don't want that to happen!).

Justification

Keep 👏 this 👏 going 👏

Unformed Thoughts

  • Which is the world's oldest map? (Maybe this one?) Whichever it is, Mercator Projection deserves a story, as maps have historically (for mathematical and political reasons) been quite wrong (see Mason, 2018). Also, maps may privilege certain data (say elevation) because of how they developed for military interests (Wood, 1992).
  • Conceptualisation 🖊️ Lawrence Lessig coins "code is law" #106
  • The forbidden experiment needs a story, but make sure to figure out if they are more or less real (there are many myths out there).
  • Conceptualisation 🖊️ Lived Experience #8
  • Conceptualisation 🖊 Sexism in Ancient Greece #22
  • A brief history of public health can inform research ethics. The idea that conditions that aren't immediately in the physician's remit matter for public health is commonplace but insightful. Semmelweis' hand-washing in 1846 is also a relatable story.
  • The suppression of evolutionary biology in Soviet Russia (Joravsky, 1962)
  • Post-Normal Science is coined in 1993 (Funtowicz & Ravetz, 1993; see Wikipedia).
  • The Bermuda Principles were established in 1996 and formalised for the Human Genome Project shortly after (Jones et al., 2018). A story brought to my attention by @yochannah!
  • Tomkins (1962) inspired Ekman in 1967 to go to Papa New Guinea and "[gather] evidence to bolster a controversial hypothesis: that all humans exhibit a small number of universal emotions, or affects, that are innate and the same all over the world" (Crawford, 2021). Story brought to my attention by the readings for the 24-Mar 2022 meeting of We & AI's book club!
  • Ancient Chinese lie detector whereby a suspect was deemed to be lying if rice placed in their mouth was dry at the end of an interrogation (Vicianova, 2015), a very early form of an "emotion recognition technology" (also from We & AI's book club!).
