Community Repair Café | Team Checklists

This is a collection of checkpoints to help you for a successful community repair cafe

Do not forget to keep the "Café" Scenario in mind, have fun, connect and sever some tea etc. to create a peaceful and good mood environment

Reception Check-List

How to handle participants and devices (record)

  • Prepare a front desk as reception for the participants with their devices
  • Define the responsibility for the desk to welcome the community members
  • Define the areas, scetch a plan for team and participants where to wait and what to do
  • Use masking tape and a list to record, label and list the devices to be repaired
  • Prepare a team member to precheck all Items and record the things that need fixing, sort out the ones not easy to fix (where no export/material is available)
  • Prepare a waiting list to keep record of devices and participants/owners (check-in, check-out):

Example

Nr Name Contact Device(s) to fix could fix? Comment
yes/no
yes/no
yes/no
yes/no

Toolkeeping Check-List

How to handle the tools and materials

  • Clear structure and List of Items/picture of Setup
  • Responsibility defined - Toolkeeper to give out tools and materials to the experts and collect them back
  • Prepare a list to check-out and check-in the given Items
  • secure the tool and material area and always keep it clean (else you will lose tools)

Example toolkeeper List:

Nr Item-name Expert returned? Comment
yes/no
yes/no
yes/no
yes/no

Expert Check-List

How to handle the repairs

  • Prepare all the experts that it is not only about the repair but also about the teaching to fix
  • Prepare the experts on how to get tools and how to bring them back to the toolkeeper when not in use anymore (sharing is ok, but you are responsible to bring back)
  • invite the owners of a successful repair to take a picture with the expert
  • Have a list to document the repairs (also the failures) to have some stats

Example

Nr Item-name to fix could fix? Comment
yes/no
yes/no
yes/no
yes/no

Collaboration Check-List

How to handle the online reporting etc

  • have some Team members ready to be there to help with whatever is needed, talk to your Community members, keep the mood up
  • Online Collaboration will need some equipment (Webcam, Laptop, Smartphone)
  • Take pictures for documentation to improve and inform your Community
  • Have someone take the responsibility of reporting in both directions
  • Invite collaborators before-hand to join your channels
  • Prepare your online channels (for synchronous or asynchronous collaboration)

Example Channels

  • Telegram Chat Group
  • GitHub Repository for Ticket management and documentation
  • BBB Online Session to stream the Webcams and get help (needs data/Airtime)

We registered;

  • 40 radios
  • 39 phones
  • 10 solar panels
  • 15 lamps
  • 01 key board(piano)
  • 105 devices in total.
  1. Out of the 40 radios registered, we were able to fix 31 of them successfully

PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED:

  • power failure

  • wiring problems

  • Volume controllers

  • Some developed faults as a result of reckless handling eg with hands watery causing decomposition of dust in engines which interfered with transmission of current.
    We were able to handle the 31 because we had equipped ourselves with materials such as ;

  • capacitors

  • Resistors

  • Volume controllers

  • Wires etc.

  • 09 radios required spares which were not within our reach ,such as power transistor s whose costs are 3$ and above.

2.Out of 39 phones registered, 20 were fixed successfully

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

  • mouse piece
  • Ear piece
  • Speaker
  • Battery terminals
  • Dry joints
  • Failure to power on due to reckless handling
  • Charging systems.
we were able to handle the 20 phones because in our material set we had
  • mouse piece
  • Ear piece
  • Charging systems
  • Speakers
  • Battery terminals
  • Washing detergents for engines
  • There was enough power provided and soldering irons were heated enough to fix the issue of dry joints.
  • Some had a problem of networks due to loose connections between the network signals and engines were fixed by bridging using soldering wire.
  • 19 phones were not fixed ,because they required spares of high cost of around 7-10$ such as ; - inner screens
    - sensors
    - Some required software installation. etc.
  1. 10 solar panels were also registered.
We managed to fix them all.

    PROBLEMS;

    • wiring
    • Diodes blown due to short circuit.
We were able to fix all because in our material box we had enough diodes of 10amps.
  • On the other hands our multimeter's we're accurate to label the issue of wiring.

4.15solar lamps(blue UNHCR lamps)

  • all fixed.
  • These lamps hardly fails to work ,reason being they are well insulated but by chance if water makes way into it,then it stops.
  • meaning its problem is reckless handling and water enters the engine.
  • The solution is ,wash the engine with petrol ,dry and fix back.
  • However when the water takes long in it ,the battery temp becomes low .
  • Making its original solar unable to charge it.
  • In this case desolder the battery off the engine, charge it with a solar of a voltage greater than the original and solder it back to the engine.
  • Incase it doesn't respond on the greater solar, then the battery requires a replacement.
  • All these is done because its original solar can't charge the battery when its completely at low temp hence it is just for topping up.

5.01 key board(piano) was not successfully fixed .

PROBLEM

  • Short circuit.
  • Its power capacitor 25v/1000uf was blown and was not inclusive in our material box.

CONCLUSION

  • 105 devices registered
  • 76 devices fixed successfully
  • 29 devices unsuccessfully.
